Kitten Development
Pregnancy and Birth.
Kittens are typically born between 60 to 68 days after mating.
Newborn Kittens.
Newborn Ragdoll kittens weigh 70-120g at birth. They rely on their sense of smell to find their mother’s nipple, nurse, sleep, and eliminate waste. The mother cat grooms them and stimulates them to eliminate by licking their bottoms.
1 Week. Newborn kittens gain 10g per day and nurse for up to 8 hours per day. They are vulnerable to cold and dehydration. When they are hungry, their ear canals open up and they start to purr, hiss or cry.
2 Weeks. As they grow, kittens use scent to locate their favorite teat. They crawl, stand up, roll over, practice pouncing. kittens will begin opening their eyes,c olor and patterns become more visible.
3 Weeks. Kittens' vision improved, making them more adventurous. They play with littermates, control movements, and teeth emerge. They may purr when given attention, great for socializing.
4 Weeks. At this stage, a kitten grooms itself, learns from its mother, explores its surroundings, tries wet and dry food, and begins to use the litter tray.
5 Weeks. A kitten during this stage will walk with ease, play with its littermates, and seek human company, while still nursing and eating solid food.
6 -7 Weeks. At this stage, kittens become very active, playing with anything they can find. They learn to use the scratching post and enjoy playing with toys.
8 Weeks. At two months old, a healthy Ragdoll kitten weighs around 800g. They spend most of their time playing with litter mates, which is crucial for their social skills development.
9 Weeks. Kittens' motor skills and hunting abilities develop during this period. Playfulness indicates good health. They learn boundaries from their mother and have their first vet visit and vaccinations at this age.
10 -11 Weeks. Kittens' coats thicken and get rounder. Colors darken, and points become prominent. They eat a lot to keep up with their energy needs.
12 Weeks. Kittens get their final health check and second vaccination at this age. If they haven't been separated from their mother before, they are taken away from her at this age to make their departure easier for them when they leave.
13 - 14 Weeks. They will be neutered at this age before going to their new forever homes.
4 - 5 Months. During this month, kittens experience a peak growth stage, which means they require more food than usual. After this stage, their growth rate will gradually decrease.
6 Months + . Kittens should weigh around 2.5-2.7 kilograms. While their growth will start to slow down, occasional growth spurts may still occur. As a result, it is important to ensure that your kitten is not underfed. Since their growth will not be predictable, it is crucial to weigh them regularly, observe them, and make sure they have enough food available to meet their calorific needs. If any behavioural problems are going to develop, you may notice the first signs from 6 months onwards. Ragdolls are generally easy to train, so spending more time with your teenage cat will help you instil good behaviour.
12 months +. Cats reach their full adult size and weight during the prime stage, which usually occurs between the ages of 1 to 4 years. During this stage, they tend to become more relaxed and settled but still maintain their playful and affectionate personality. Ragdoll cats also develop their full coat, eye color and ear shape during this time, making them a stunning and beautiful breed.
